A Spiritual Virus

Scripture

Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within.

~Psalm 31:10, NLT

Quote

Sin is like a virus: it has invaded our body and drains our moral and spiritual strength.

~Billy Graham

I passed a church sign the other day that read: “Sin is like a credit card: have fun now, pay later.” Dr. Graham compared sin to a virus. He wrote this devotion before covid. We don’t hear anything about the flu anymore but the so-called covid variants have the same symptoms as the flu. One of the symptoms is that you have no energy. I’ve heard people say, “I had covid and I never missed a day of work.” I don’t let that bother me because I am sure, they didn’t have the same type of covid that I had. Not only did I not continue to work, I couldn’t even read or study. I lost more than energy; I lost my ability to focus, plus I coughed night and day for three weeks. Sin is like a spiritual virus that invades our body and drains our moral strength. Sin makes us spiritually weak. Sin infects every part of our life: our mind, emotions, relationships, motives, everything. When we come to Christ in repentance and faith, we receive the Holy Spirit and He is God’s antiseptic to fight sin. The Spirit convicts us when we sin. A child of God can sin but not without having a guilty conscience. The Holy Spirit is always there to blow the whistle when we step out of bounds.

A part of our sanctification is a growing dissatisfaction with sin and the world. I hate sin and especially my sin. I am not saying that sin is not a problem for me–it is very much a problem. A cousin told me the other day, “Stupid has no age limit.” He is right; I am living proof. The older I get, the greater my longing to be free of this body of sin. I know Christ has freed me from the penalty of sin which is hell, but I long to free of its power and presence. Oh, that will be glory for me: No sin, no guilt, no shame, no condemnation and no temptation.
