Faith And Sight

Scripture

It is the Lord who provides the sun to light the day and the moon and stars to light the night.

~Jeremiah 31:35, NLT

Quote

It is faith without sight. When we can see, it is reason not faith that directs us.

~A. B. Simpson

Things have changed drastically over the past century in terms of navigation but the ancient mariners traveled the seas by looking up at the stars. One of the more constant things in the universe, at least from our view point here on earth is the constellations. Many constellations are mentioned in the Bible: Job 9:9 mentions three...He made all the stars—the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the southern sky. I have not visited a Planetarium but it is on my bucket list. I am fascinated by the stars and there constellations. The stars are fixed in the heavens and they are faithfully the same night after night, century after century, millennium after millennium. Even as recent as two hundred years ago, sea captains charted their course by the stars. When they set sail, there was not path marked on the sea. They did not find their way by looking downward or earthward, they looked above for guidance. What is absolutely amazing is the pinpoint accuracy of their voyage across the sea. They would spot land some twenty miles out and they would know exactly where they were and what harbor was nearest. They did all this by looking at the stars.

When Abraham set sail for the promise land, he had no idea where God was leading him. Water is water and it all looks the same. Abraham had to look up to get guidance and for doing so, he became the father of faith. June and I left the land of our ancestors in October of 1971 and we had no idea where God was taking us. Our first port was New Orleans, a melting pot of many races; then it was Mississippi and from there to Cherokee, Alabama. We came to Danville in April of 1979. Ironically I drove through Danville a few times when my brother lived in Hartselle and we lived in Cherokee. I visited Danville as a small boy. One of mother’s second cousins lived where the silos are on Targum Road, very close to Jeff and Jenifers. This was before Stephenson Road had a name, it was a field road at the time. Of all the places in the world, I never dreamed of spending my life in Danville but I can tell you for a fact, I am glad I looked up and followed the stars. God has been extremely good to me. I can’t imagine having better friends or a better life. Step out on faith and trust God to lead: you will not be sorrow. Don’t try to chart your own course by looking at the water: look to heaven for guidance.
