Greed

Scripture

“Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

~Luke 12:15, NLT

Life is not measured by how much we accumulate, but how much we give.

Many people are building on sand or as Billy Graham says, “They are building on the wrong rock, the rock of materialism.” Everyone who has been on an international mission trip will understand what I am about to say: Americans have enjoyed the greatest wealth and prosperity in the history of mankind. We have more things than any civilization that has ever lived. June and I are far from rich {by American standards} but we have everything we need. We have a pantry stocked with food and one refrigerator stocked with soft drinks {mostly for the grands}.  I would have killed for an RC and a moon pie with I was kid. Our grandkids stop and get a coke anytime they want. We may have some wants but we have no needs, or at least none that I can think of at the moment. We are in the lower bracket of the middle incomers which means the majority are above us, but we have no desire to keep up with the Jones. Unfortunately, this is not true with your average American family. We want more and more. It seems that we cannot get enough. Most Americans are dissatified about something: they want bigger houses, finer vehicles, better vacations and on and on. There is no end to the things we crave. It seems that the more we have, the less satisfied we become.

How is it that people with far less are more content? When our teams go to Guatemala, they build houses for the Guatemalans, but these so called houses are more like one of our tool sheds. As a matter of fact, many of you would not have them for a tool shed. This should tell us something. Do you think that Jesus may have been right when he said, Life is not measured by how much you own. Just give it some thought, that is all I ask.

When I talk about needs, I am talking about material things: I do have needs. I need wisdom and lots of it. When in comes to spiritual things, I am poor and needy. Busy day ahead. Jackson’s baby sitter has covid so Big Mama and I have him today. She is going to B-town to doctor and that means I am supposed to pick him up from pre-school. I hope I don’t forget. He has a helicopter mom and she will not forgive me if I do. She doesn’t read the blog and neither does granny {her mom}. The only way they could find out would be Big Mama who reads it everyday. Big Mama would never betray me.

I’ve enjoyed the cool mornings and yesterday was great all day long but I am afraid the heat is coming back. We are less than a month away from fall, PTL.

I hope you have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
