Hard Hearts

Scripture

I said, ‘Plant the good seeds of righteousness and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lordthat he may come and shower righteousness upon you.’

~Hosea 10:12, NLT

Quote

There shall be showers of blessing
Oh, that today they might fall
Now as to God we’re confessing
Now as on Jesus we call

~D. W. Whittle

David said in Psalm 65, You take care of the earth and water it, making it rich and fertile. You drench the plowed ground with rain, melting the clods and leveling the ridges. You soften the earth with showers and bless its abundant crops. Have you given any thought to the ministry of rain. Without rain the surface of the earth would become so hard that no plow could break it. Hard soil repels seeds. We break the ground to make it fallow and able to receive. Our hearts are like the ground in some ways. When we grow hard hearted, we lose our ability to receive the word of God. We become crusty and cruel. We have no compassion on others. The religious Jews of Jesus day were so hard of heart that they did not care about human suffering. They cared about their traditions, their customs and their money but they didn’t love their neighbors. When Jesus healed the man with a withered hand, they got upset that He did it on the sabbath. They were indignant that Jesus broke their tradition but could care less about the man who was suffering.

Arteriosclerosis is not a new thing, Samuel questioned his own generation; “Why then do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts?” Psalm 95:8, “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness.” The writer of Hebrews voiced this same warning three times [3:8, 3:15, 4:7]. Rain is a constant need and without it, the surface of the earth will grow hard and become unproductive. Spiritual rain is also necessary or out hearts will grow hard and become unproductive. I listen to Michael W. Smith’s HEALING RAIN IS FALLING DOWN and I pray for showers of blessings. What we need comes from above so I pray, OPEN THE FLOOD GATES OF HEAVEN, LET IT RAIN.
