Judgment

Scripture

Oh, that Moab had wings so she could fly away, for her towns will be left empty, with no one living in them.

~Jeremiah 48:9, NLT

Judgment never comes without a reason.

~Ya’akov

Jeremiah was a prophet to the nations, not just to Judah. I read his prophecy about Moab the other day and I saw some things I had missed previously. The Moabites were connected to Abraham by blood. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot. So Abraham was Lot’s uncle and Lot’s grandson Moab was Abraham’s great-great nephew. Of course the Nation of Moab began with incest and never had the monotheistic values of Uncle Abraham. The Moabites virtually dared God to judge them. They literally invited Judgment. What they did was foolish. Who in their right mind would dare God to flex His holy muscles. He is a consuming fire and He is to be feared and respected. The Moabites did four things to invite God’s judgment.

  1. First was their arrogant prideWe have all heard of the pride of Moab, for his pride is very great.
    We know of his lofty pride, his arrogance, and his haughty heart. I know about his insolence,” says the Lord.  {Jeremiah 48:29-30} The LORD hates pride and haughtiness {Prov. 6:17}. Proverbs 8:13 says, “All who fear the LORD will hate evil. Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech.” Pride leads to disgrace, conflict, destruction and humiliation. This is the reason I hate pride; it always leads to humiliation. I rebuke every proud thought that enters my mind immediately because I do not want to suffer the consequences. How do I know so much about pride? I have learned the hard way. Pride is sneaky. He slips up on you and bits the heel. Sometimes we don’t even realize that we have been bit until the humiliation comes and it will come.
  2. They rebelled against GodFor a fire comes from Heshbon, King Sihon’s ancient home, to devour the entire land with all its rebellious people. {Jeremiah 48:45} Only fools rebel agains God because there is no future for anyone who rebels against God.
  3. They worshipped idols–Chemosh the detestable god of the Moabites is mentioned three times in Jeremiah. “What sorrow awaits you, O people of Moab! The people of the god Chemosh are destroyed!” {Jeremiah 48:46}
  4. They sacrificed their Children–Chemosh was the detestable god of the Moabites. They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the altar fires of Chemosh. God hates child sacrifice. It is simply a matter of time before He judges any nation that practiced child-sacrifice which in our case is abortion.

Father, have mercy on America. Lead us to repentance. May we turn from our wicked ways and seek your face. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen!

Another good weekend and LORD’s day: God is good. Who would have thought we would be praying for rain this soon. My garden is dry but I sure love the temps. God bless you and thanks for reading the blog.

Pray for me as I speak at the National Day of Prayer in Decatur this Thursday.
