Seeing The Cross

Scripture

And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

~Mark 15:39, NIV

Quote

Humility is the light that enables lost sinners to see the cross.

~Ray Comfort

We live in a world that is not hungry for righteousness. Most people are preocuppied with their quest for happiness and they think that can be achieved through the accumulation of wealth and success in their endeavors.  If you make happiness your goal, you will never find it. C.S. Lewis said, If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them….They are a great fountain of energy spurting up out the very center of reality. If you are close to it, the spray will wet you: if you are not you will remain dry. Once a man is united to Christ, how could he not live forever? In brief, true joy and happiness is found only in Christ. If you pursue Christ, you will find happiness. If you make happiness your quest, you will not find it or Christ.

My question is this: how is it that the great majority ignore the cross and the atoning death of Christ? Why aren’t people repenting? Why are they not coming in droves with tear stained eyes seeking the Savior? I don’t think they are seeing the cross. I don’t think they recognize the sinless, purity and holiness of Christ; nor do they see their complicity in His torture and death. The cross has never moved them. I don’t believe they even think of the cross or consider what happened that day in Jerusalem. I will say this: if you do see the cross and it doesn’t move you, something is wrong. Ray Comfort may be right, “Pride is blinding the lost world and keeping them from seeing the cross.” If you do see the cross, shout hallelujah! Reminds me of an old hymn…

I saw the cross of Jesus,
when burdened with my sin;
I sought the cross of Jesus,
to give me peace within;
I brought my soul to Jesus,
He cleansed it in His blood;
and in the cross of Jesus
I found my peace with God.

Forty-Niner fellowship today at 11:30. I don’t know all that we will have but I do know we will have some of that delicious roast from Carol’s kitchen, Mac and cheese from Big Bob Gibsons, slaw from Sister, peas from Big Mama and mashed potatoes from Cindy. We have some out sick and some traveling but we will have plenty and you don’t have to be 49 or above. If you are off, come and join us. We will not be in the new fellowship hall. Still waiting on the floors and the fixtures. They may be there working on the floors today.

We have looked at the long range weather forecast and our September 1 outdoor service will begin at 9:00 am. We haven’t had an outdoor service since our sunrise service at Easter. Looking forward to it.

Hard to believe but we have a football game tonight. Our grandson Ryder in a senior. If he stays healthy, it could become the first player to start every game for four straight years. Mylee is on the cheering squad but she is out sick. Ty played Basketball last night and Josie had a VB match in Gunterville.

Big Mama and Hannah ate at the Fish Creel in Anderson, Alabama last night and Hannah gave the rave reviews. Best hush puppie in the country. June’s parents are buried at Good Springs which is four miles from Anderson.

Have a great Friday, thanks for reading the blog.
