The Human Dilemma

Scripture

Lord, see my anguish! My heart is broken and my soul despairs, for I have rebelled against you.

~Lamentations 1:20, NLT

Quote

The soul has needs just like the body and the mind. Don’t neglect the soul!

~Billy Graham {Personal Peace, p. 6}

My body has needs: food is one and rest is another. If these needs are not met, there will be a breakdown. A body with unmet needs grows weak and unhealthy; a soul with unmet needs is unhappy and a malnourished spirit leads to unholiness. Billy Graham travelled the world many times. He became so famous that dignitaries and world leaders wanted to meet him. He was invited to lunch with one of the wealthiest men on earth. The man who invited him to lunch was 75 years old. Dr. Graham said he was on the verge of tears throughout the meal and the conversation. This is what he said to Billy Graham, “I am the most miserable man on earth. Right out there is my yacht. I can go anywhere in the world I want to go. I have my own private plane and a helicopter. I have every thing I want and yet I am miserable.” Dr. Graham shared the gospel with him but he did not repent and turn to Christ. He may have repented later but there is no evidence to indicate that he gave his life to Christ. He gained the whole world but in the process, his soul dried up. He had the world but it cost him his soul. Don’t neglect your spiritual needs.

After the lunch and interview, Dr. Graham and his wife Ruth were escorted back down the mountain to their cottage on the beach. That evening, an old English preacher had ask for a few minutes with the Grahams. His testimony was the opposite. The old preacher was 75 and a widower. He spent most of his time taking care of his two invalid sisters. His boundless energy and jubilant joy reminded Dr. Graham of a cricket. “I don’t have two pounds to my name,” he said, “but I am the happiest man on this island.” What a contrast! We spend too much time taking care of the body which is dying and we neglect the soul which is eternal.
