Scripture
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
~Galatians 6:7, ESV
Quote
Grace does not mean that sin does not matter.
~Ya’akov
All sin has consequences. Some sins carry greater consequences than others but no sin is free of consequences. Sin pays wages. David sinned by taking Uriah’s wife but David suffered the consequences and they were very painful. Joseph was a young man of deep integrity and although I do not know what Mrs. Potifar looked like, I am assuming she was very attractive. If there was no attraction there at all, then there was no temptation, but I believe there was an attraction. I am not equating myself with Joseph; I am not that good. His primary motivation was not to sin against God nor his earthly master. Nothing is said about consequences but you and I know, had Joseph sinned, there would have been consequences.
What about us? What motivates us to resist temptation? I think for me the number one factor is the FEAR OF GOD and the fear of consequences. I have lived long enough to know–YOU CAN’T GET AWAY WITH SIN, ANY SIN. David didn’t lose his job, but he did lose his family the golden years of being a grand parent. What is more important, your job or your relationship with Christ? What do you treasure most, pleasure for a moment or peace for a life time? I can assure you, no one gets by with anything. Everyone will pay either in this life or the next. I tend to think believers pay here and now. You can’t do what Cain did without suffered the same consequences. Cain, David, Lot, Solomon, the Prodigal Son or the Elder Brother–makes no difference–if we follow their example, we will reap the same harvest. David thought his status made him an exception. Powerful people often think this way but it doesn’t matter what office you hold or how much power you have, you will reap what you sow. There will be a payday someday: you can count on it. So before you sin, think about the consequences.
