To Know HIM Better

Scripture

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.

~Ephesians 1:17, NIV

Quote

All I want is to know Christ and the power that raised Him from the dead.

~Paul of Tarsus

Some relationships can be mysterious; it all depends on wisdom and revelation–Your wisdom and their revelation. We humans are very good at hiding things. There could be some things about you that I do not know simply because you have intentionally hid them from me. On the other hand, there could be some things I don’t know about you because I have not been paying attention. Timothy Keller talks about a friend who goes silent on him from time to time. Once Keller said to the man, “What have I done, you haven’t said a word: have I offended you in some way?” “No,” said his friend, “you are just not ready to listen, so why should I speak.” Obviously to get to know a person better, we have to spend time with them and we have to get into their mind and heart. The best way to do this is to listen carefully to what they say.

What about getting to know Jesus better? There is no question: He is the mysterious One yet He wants to be known. His wisdom and love are too deep for us to fathom. We are not going to learn all there is to know about HIM…too much HIM and to little us. His love is like an ocean and our capacity to know Him is like a teaspoon but we can know Him better. If someone walked up to me and said, “I know everything there is to know about Jesus.” I would chuckle and know immediately that he was insane. No one knows all there is to know about Jesus but we can know more. Here is the good news: Jesus wants us to know Him better. He is not hiding Himself from us. Our approach has to be one of humility: we can’t know Him apart from His revelation of Himself.

Have you ever meet a person and the more you got to know them, the more you liked them. On the other hand, there are some that the more you know, the more you dislike. The more you get to know Jesus, the more you will love Him and His love will transform your life. His love will change your attitude and your desires. One of my favorite songs these days is by Hillsong, “I Surrender.”

Here I am down on my knees again, Surrendering all; And find me here Lord as You draw me near, Desperate for You,
Desperate for You. I surrender. Drench my soul as mercy and grace unfold I hunger and thirst, I hunger and thirst. With arms stretched wide I know You hear my cry, speak to me now, speak to me now. I surrender…I surrender…I wanna know You more; I want to know you more.

I really like the Chorus… Like a rushing wind, Jesus breathe within, Lord have Your way, Lord have Your way in me. Like a mighty storm stir within my soul, Lord have Your way, Lord have Your way in me.

I linked it for you but it is over ten minutes long…give it your full attention some time. If not now, later!

As one of our Fellows in Seminary use to say, “It is fun to preach when you have a message.” I thank God for calling me to the ministry and giving me the opt to share the gospel from the pulpit. God is good, all the time. He has an eternal plan and He has the power to make it happen. No, you and I don’t have the intellect to comprehend the plan–its infinite. God has put us in our place–we can believe but we cannot know–He didn’t give us that capacity.
