Can Love Cover?

Scripture

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

~1 Peter 4:8, NIV

Quote

Love does not seek it’s own; it is not selfish and it always cast the other person is the best possible light.

~Timothy Keller

No amount of human love can atone for sin so what is Peter talking about? He is quoting Proverbs 10:12, Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. Hatred, harshness, and anger kindle strife and conflict. At the heart of conflict is annoyance which happens when we have contempt for others. Have you every heard or used the phrase, “He/She gets on my last nerve.” Peter and Solomon is not talking about atonement, only the blood of Jesus covers our sin. They are talking about our social interaction. When we respond with anger and resentment, we try to uncover the other persons shame and guilt. In other words, we try to expose them and that is not agape love.

I have many good friends or at least I think I do. Someone came to me a few months ago speaking negatively about one of my dear friends and immediately I began making excuses for him. I reminded them of all the good things he had done for me and my family. I have seen this over and over again: a good man can be married to a sorry woman or vice versa and yet they will defend their spouse to the hilt. Do we really want to get so picky that we bring every fault a person has to the light? I don’t think so. Every human being has quirks, idiosyncrasies, and mannerisms that might be distasteful to you. Clutter does not bother me but it drives Big Mama and Lexi insane. I change from my slippers to my work shoes on the front porch where I have a chair. I want my shoes left in the front of the chair so I do not have to bend over but guess what: they get put neatly behind the chair some time during the night and the next morning I have to get down on my hands and knees to get them out and put them on. If what she did annoyed me I would call her out for being OCD but since I love her I will just praise her for being neat and tidy. If you have a project around the house, you do not want June or Lexi helping: they will put your tools up every time you lay them down. Sounds to me like I had rather expose than cover but so long as you get the point.

Running late today: tried to beat the rain and plant a little corn. We got a few sprinkles but I see nothing coming. You are not going to believe this but we need a little rain. Day 47 of the Covid-19 give the government an excuse to control us crisis. The Virginia Governor is showing his true colors; he opened the Wal-marts but not the churches. I am ready to go back today and I have no fear of the virus or the government but DRIVE-IN church at GP is reaching more than we had on the inside. I saw only one single passenger vehicle leave our parking lot Sunday, all the rest had two or more. One van had five and several had four. This means we are running somewhere between 110-130 for Sunday morning worship and the offering have been fantastic. So I am in a dilemma. I hate to fix something that isn’t broke.

Of course hot weather is coming and it will be hard on the virus and DRIVE-IN church. Right now I am thinking about resuming Wednesday night first and Sunday morning second. We may give it a shot next Wednesday night [May 13].

We had a POF last night as a result of the CHILDREN’S video produced by Josh and Mary. Instead of the right hand of Christian fellowship, we are going to let the cars drive by and honk. I am so excited.

My sister pointed out something from the video on Sunday’a a week ago. I announced at the beginning of my message that it only had two points instead of three and car horn went off: I’m sure it was Markham. She thought that was hilarious. I thought is was very distasteful! Just kidding, it was a hoot or maybe a toot.
