I am And So Are You

Scripture

For in Him we live and move and exist.

~Acts 17:28, NASB95

Quote

“It is woven into the fabric of your existence that when you speak of yourself, you must say His name.”

~Jonathan Cohn

If you have followed me for any length of time, you know that the sacred name Yahweh {translated Jehovah in septuagint} comes from the Hebrew verb for being. This is God’s covenant or personal name. There are many gods but only one Jehovah. When Moses ask God for a personal name, a way to distinguish between Him and all the gods of Egypt, God said to Moses, “Tell them I AM sent you.” This is the Hebrew verb for being and it contains every tense known to man. God was, He is and He will always be. God was saying to Moses, I AM who I am, what I AM, since I AM and because I AM. He is declaring His self-existent eternal nature. As the black preacher said, “The LORD is…He has always been is and He will always be is!

When someone asks me my name, I say, I am Jack.” My existence is linked to His existence. If He was not, I would not be and neither would you. Because HE is, I am. This makes Acts 17 and Paul message to the Athenians come to life. “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the One I’m telling you about. He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since He is Lord of heaven and earth, He doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve His needs—for He has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find Him—though He is not far from any one of us. For in Him we live and move and {are} exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol.” Wow, what a sermon! I can sum it up is five words…Because Jesus is–You are. Tell me this is not awesome.

EXTRA

We give thanks and praise for a good weekend and good services. We had a foot washing service at the POINT and I think everyone was blessed. Two big events coming up this weekend: the DBC BLOCK PARTY on Saturday night and the REVIVE NOW YOUTH RALLY on Sunday night. Both start at 6:00 PM. Everyone needs to donate a $15 dollar bingo prize to Mandy this week. I think the bingo will be a big draw. It was a favorite for years. Have a great week!
