Mutilating a Famous Quote

Scripture

These false teachers are like unthinking animals… They are a disgrace and a stain among you. They delight in deception They commit adultery with their eyes, and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin, and they are well trained in greed. They live under God’s curse.

If it looks like duck and quacks like a duck; it is a duck.

Who would have ever believed: at the very same time we have a parrot in the White House and a parrot on the perch of the SBC. Ed the parrot Litton preached J.D. Greear’s liberal litany word for word. I can’t call it a sermon; more of a diatribe but in the message Greer tried to borrow some wisdom from the late great C.S. Lewis by altering his quote. Lewis said, God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains.” Greear’s quote was, “God whispers about sexual sins and He shouts about materialism and religious pride.” Eddie the parrot made the exact same quote but did not give a source. In writing or oratory, we call this plagiarism. It is the practice of taking credit for what someone else said. Rick Warren is the master of our age at plagiarism. Warren is a fading memory but J.D. and Eddie are current events.

The first thing I want to say about the quote is that it is hogwash. There is nothing in scripture to support J.D.’s claim. As a matter of fact, the scriptures teach the opposite. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:18, Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Paul made this strong statement because sexual sins are highly destructive not only to the body but to relationships. All sins have a spiritual nature or aspect as well as social. In God’s eyes, hate is equivalent to murder and lust to adultery but this is not true in the social sense. I had much rather you hate me than kill me. Hate will destroy the hater but it has no destructive effect on the hated. Lust is one thing…Peter said the false teachers were committing adultery with their eyes and that too can be destructive to the one lusting but it is much, much worse to actually follow through and commit rape or adultery. So yes, in a spiritual sense, lust is as bad as adultery but not in the social sense. Adultery destroys relations by the dozens. The fall out from such sin affects two couples, all the children, grand parents of the children and on and on. I have known and can document such fallout causing pain for over 50 years. Of course David’s affair with Bathsheba is a perfect example. Once you get into the physical realm of acting on your lust; it is too late to put all the feathers back in the pillow. The consequences are far reaching and uncontrollable.

As for as the perverted acts of sex; they are highly destructive to the body, soul, mind and spirit. Homosexuality destroyed Sodom and the cities of the plain. It came within an eyelash of destroying the tribe of Benjamin. It destroyed the Roman Empire and it will destroy America. There is no precedent in scripture or history to the contrary. Sexual perversion is not just another sin. You cannot compare it to gluttony or misspeaking a word. I admit that greed and jealousy are consuming sins but nothing destroys the human soul quicker than sexual perversion. I am a wretch and I deserve death and hell but this is not the point. I’m not pretending to be better than anyone, I’m just telling you what scripture says about sexual sins.

A man was crossing the lake Pontchartrain bridge {26 miles long} back in the 60’s and he almost drove off into the lake. A tug boat hit the bridge and knocked out a full span of the bridge. Several vehicles plunged into the lake. He managed to get his vehicle stopped. It was a very foggy night and visibility was poor. He got out of his car and ran down the right lane waving his coat and yelling stop. People didn’t want to stop, they thought he was crazy but the first car did slow down in time to see his car sitting in the high way with its flashers. That man saved countless lives that night. I don’t think he felt morally superior to anyone. He came within an inch of plunging into those deep waters and he was just warning others of the danger.

Well today is Mylee Reese birthday, she is 15. Wow, grands grow up faster than your kids. Granny T’s birthday is tomorrow. You get’m granny! Thank God, all our youth got home in one piece despite a six car pile up and a lot of traffic. It was right at nine when I got home last night; we had to carry all the vans to Athens but we got’er done! I can’t believe that half of 2021 is gone.
