I suppose at one time or the other, we have all made remarks that were profoundly hypocritical. This is certainly true of the chief priest. Now the chief priest are not to be confused with the high priest for we find them both in the same verses twice: once by Matthew and once by Mark. Matthew 26:3-4 for example: Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, named Caiaphas; and they plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. A good example would be the Pope and the Cardinals. The Pope was a Cardinal but when elected Pope he obtains an office higher than a Cardinal. The term chief priest does not occur in O.T. but it is believed to be that privileged class from which the High Priest was selected. In other words, the Sadducees. No group was more diabolical or hypocritical than the Sadducees. They were power hungry aristocrats who were willing to stoop to any level to obtain or maintain power. Similar to modern day democrats.
These wicked and depraved churchmen wanted Jesus crucified. They could have stoned Him to death by their law but they cleverly manipulated Pilate to do it for them. Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent and that the Jews were motivated by envy. Pilate wanted to set Jesus free but the chief priest had worked the crowd [rabble] into a frenzy and they yelled, “No, crucify Him.” When Pilate asked mockingly, “Do you want me to crucify your king?” They come back with this hypocritical and incriminating retort…THE EMPEROR IS OUR KING [NIV, “We have no king but Caesar”]. These men are supposedly God’s PRIEST. Their allegiance is to be to HIM. The truth is they were pragmatist and compromisers whose chief end was to secure their power. They had no love for God nor man. They were hypocrites. The priestly garb they wore was a cover that cloaked their greed and wickedness. They were the most corrupt and vile men on the earth.
Everyone has a king: the difference is that most have a king and some have a KING. The majority have a little k king and may God have mercy on them. Our KING is Jesus with a big K. He is the only ETERNAL KING, the only ALMIGHTY KING and the only KING of kings.
