Pride

Scripture

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

~Proverbs 16:18, NIV

Quote

It was pride that turned an angel into a devil.

~Augustine

I am a note writer: my office is filled with notes. Tuesday, I was looking through some notes trying to find some quotes I had used in BREAKFAST AND THE BIBLE and I come across these notes on PRIDE. You know that right in the middle of pride and sin is the unbending stiff necked I. It is the one letter that stand proud and erect. You know the Greek equivalent is the litte word ‘ego’. Anyway, I want to share my notes on pride. I am sure a lot of them came from C.S. Lewis. I put practically everything in the form of a list. I am a sequential learner; I need a list.

  1. Pride is the gateway sin; the mother of all sins.
  2. Pride is the only disease that when a man has it, everyone knows except him.
  3. Pride hates humility.
  4. Pride is subtle. It is the proverbial ‘snake in the grass.’
  5. Pride is competitive: prone to jealousy and envy.
  6. Pride gets no pleasure is having something; only in having more than the next person.
  7. Pride is not satisfied with riches: I must be richer than you. It is the comparison that makes us proud. “Thank You LORD that I am not like other…”
  8. A prideful man will take your girlfriend, not because he wants her but because he wants to show you that he is a better man.
  9. Pride always has a rival: someone or something to compete with and compare ourselves to.
  10. Pride is condescending and highly offensive. God is not the only one who resist the proud.
  11. Pride is an enemy to true worship.
  12. Pride is a spiritual cancer: it will consume your joy, destroy your peace and extinguish your zeal.
  13. Pride is resident within the flesh: it is a problem for every human being and it does not go away with baptism. It is a constant temptation and vexation that we have to deal with.
  14. Pride cannot be trusted and it must be overcome. Either we work toward its destruction or it will work toward ours.

Extra

Have a good day and try to stay warm. I think it starts getting better tomorrow. Forty-Niners we meet in the morning at 11:30. Its pot luck so to speak. We will have brisket and chicken for the meat. I think we will have some white beans to go with our slaw and Lord willing, I am making hushpuppies. If you are off, come and join us. It is 100% food and fellowship. I do a blessing and that is it. Come and bring someone with you.

Have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
