Role Models

Scripture

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

~Matthew 5:16, NASB

Quote

“I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model. I am paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball, doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.”

~Sir Charles Barkley

Sometimes I read an article and agree with it contents, but in good conscience I must quote the article because I would feel like a hypocrite if lead you to believe it came from me. So I am going to print as it. I can’t really tell you who said it because some of the articles do not mention the author.

Whether we like it or not, we are role models. Hopefully, the lives we lead and the choices we make will serve as enduring examples of the spiritual abundance that is available to all who worship God and obey His commandments. Ask yourself this question: Are you the kind of role model that you would want to emulate? {My answer was “No!”} If so, congratulations. But if certain aspects of your behavior could stand improvement, the best day to begin the self-improvement is today. Because whether you realize it or not, people you love are watching your behavior, and they are learning how to live. You owe it to others and yourself to live righteously.

I don’t agree that we can improve ourselves unless you factor in God’s grace, but these questions made me think. To be honest, I don’t really want to be a role model. Like Sir Charles, I would rather people did not look at me as a model, but I also realize that I have no choice. I’m a little uneasy about the whole thing, and I pray for drastic improvement. Repeated failure is discouraging.

A Watchman Nee devotion helped me this morning: the devil is an accuser and he works day and night {Revelation 12:10}. He is relentless. The bad thing is: his accusations are not unfounded which is why he attacks our conscience. If we focus on our repeated failure, we become morbid and discouraged which is what he wants. To confess our sin to God is wholesome, but make no confessions to Satan. We must come against him with the WORD and the BLOOD. He hates them both, almost as much as he hates Jesus. We can’t stay focued on our sin and be victorious. We acknowledge that the blood of Christ is more powerful than our sin. We focus on the purity and goodness of Christ. The devil has no defense for the perfection of Jesus.

The lady doctor did my root canal in 30 minutes. I know that sounds impossible and I would not have believed it myself, but I was there: it happened. I am glad I don’t have to go to Madison every moring around 7:00: traffic is as bad as Nashville or Atlanta. Did you know that Huntsville is now the largest city in Alabama? I heard that on the radio yesterday.

Well October is practically gone and our chances for any rain in the month are dropping. I love rain; I long for rain. I even dream about rain. Busy day today but a fun day for me. Executive committee meeting at 11:38, cook stew at DBC this evening and jambalaya at the Point tonight. Take your pick: stew at Danville or jambalaya at the Point. I will tell you hands down, Pat Smith is a better cook than Jack Bailey.

I hope you have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
