Seek Him

Scripture

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who draws near to God must believe that He is andthat He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

~Hebrews11:6, LSB

Quote

There is but one appetite that supremely matters: seeking God. There is but one eternally damning sin: not to seek God.

~Calvin Miller {Until He Comes, d.86}

Moses said to Israel concerning the distant future, But from there you will seek Yahweh your God, and you will find Him, for you will search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.” Somehow Moses knew that Israel would rebel against the LORD and become apostate. His prophecy is that eventually, Israel will seek the LORD, and will do so with their whole heart. This is what I am longing for. I pray about it constantly. It is going to happen, I just don’t know when. Oh that it would happen in my lifetime. What a glorious thing it will be to see Jews in mass turn to Jesus.

Although the prophecy about may relate to the distant future, we can seek God now! Psalm 69:32, The humble see it and are glad; You who seek God, let your heart revive. Psalm 22:26, The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. Isaiah 55:6, Seek the LORD while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. There are countless other verses on seeking the LORD. There is no question that our beloved Creator put this appetite in us. God created us to need bread and water and life cannot be sustained without it. He also created us to need HIM. There is an emptiness in us that can only be filled by HIM. Due to our vain and rebellious nature, we try to fill that vacuum with other things but Jesus is the only thing that will truly satisfy our spiritual hunger.

So why do some hunger and thirst for righteousness while others do not? Why was Jacob a seeker and Esau a hedionist? Esau never acknowledges a spiritual appetite. How can I explain the difference? I can’t and I don’t make any attempt to do so. Paul said, For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. Although I am evangelical and believe in repentance and faith, I also acknowledge that everything is grace. I do not see faith and repentance as works. I don’t recall boasting about my faith or repentance. Make no mistake about it, I am saved by the atoning work of Christ on the cross so I glory in the cross, not my faith or repentance but both John and Jesus came preaching repentance of sin and faith toward the Lord Jesus. Why did Zaccheus climb a tree? Why did Bartimaeus keep hollowing when those around him told him to hush? They were seeking. Who gave them the appetite to seek? Who put that desire in their heart? Their Creator of course. Are you seeking? Do you hunger for more? If the answer is yes, God is at work in you so be thankful and keep seeking. Those who seek find.
