Self-Control

Scripture

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

~James 3:8

Quote

The tongue has no bones but it is strong enough to break a heart.

I would never at random write a blog on the misuse of the tongue and you know why; I have misspoken more times that I care to or can remember, but I was cleaning out my desk and saw these old notes and I new if I threw them in the trash, I would never be able to recall them. There are things in life that we cannot control. You did not choose your parents, your race, place of birth, your gender, or the color of your eyes. Your height and the color of your eyes and hair are in your DNA, your genetic coding. I always wanted to be 6’3″ and weight 210. I weigh 210 right now but I came for short of 6’3″. I have no control over my height but I do have control over the weight. There are many things that you and I have the power to control and the tongue is one of them. We are responsible for what we say and what we don’t say. Just as talking too much can be a sin, it is also sinful to be silent when you need to speak up. The majority of Americans are opposed to abortion but they are afraid to speak up. We are afraid of the political police and the cancel culture so we keep our heads down and play it safe.

Of course, you would expect some big mouth like myself to upbraid those who are timid and afraid but that doesn’t excuse people like me from the sin of saying too much. If I had to err on one side or the other, I would take the quiet side. Life is tough but sometimes we make it tougher by being unwise and unkind in what we say. Lately, I have been working on ‘speaking the truth is love.’ Your are wondering: “How is that going?” Not that good but I am working on it. One of my pastor friends, a much better man than myself, keeps telling me not to label people. If you follow Karl Marx, is it wrong for me to call you a Marxist? I follow Christ and I don’t mind if people label me as a Christian.  Well, as usual I digress. Is it wrong for me to make fun of liberals? I try my best not too but it is an addiction that is hard to break.

Extra

June read somewhere last week that Biden is wanting to go digital on currency. He wants to eliminate cash. In other words, he wants to know what we spend, where we spend it and what we spend it on. IT IS NONE OF HIS BUSINESS and I am totally against a cashless society. It hurts me everything I see someone using a card to less than $5. I think surely they have five dollars. The Credit Card companies and the banks are making millions when you use the plastic. I know, for some things, plastic is better but for a coke at a ball game? No way Jose! Income Tax is a government invasion into our personal lives and doing away with cash will give them even more power. It is time to remove Big Brothers hand from out pocket.

I read GEORGE WASHINGTON, THE MOST INDISPENSABLE MAN IN AMERICAN HISTORY  a few years ago. I have a top ten from that book…

  1. He was a Christian, a Gentleman, and a man of prayer.
  2. He was a true patriot and stateman.
  3. He was extraordinary courageous in combat. The Native Americans called him the great white ghost. They didn’t think a bullet could kill him.
  4. He was a man of unusual humility. He never felt adequate; he always felt overwhelmed by the task at hand.
  5. He fought with the ranks and walked among them. He did not send troops into battle, he lead them into battle.
  6. He was a quick learner and knew how to adapt. This may have been the key to his success.
  7. He always respected his opponents.
  8. He had a heart for his men. He advocating for them for years after the war was over because most of them never got paid.
  9. He refused to take credit or advantage. He stopped the army from assuming a military dictatorship.
  10. His passion was outdoors. He loved farming. He never dreamed or desired to spend his life in the military or in government. He didn’t want to be president. {how refreshing}

Have a great day. Thanks for reading the blog.
