The Heart

Scripture

Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.

~Proverbs 28:26, NIV

Quote

To ignore God’s word and wisdom is to run aground on the rocks of foolishness and bring unnecessary pain to yourself and to those around you.

We are in Proverbs on Wednesday night and I am loving the study. I will be using Proverbs 4:23 tonight, “Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.” After reading my commentaries, I decided to study the uses of the Hebrew word lave which is translated more than 500 times as “heart” and it is found 93 times in Proverbs. So I decided to look at the verses in Proverbs that use this word ‘heart’. I don’t have room to share them all but here are a few:

  • The cunning heart–7:10
  • The wise heart–10:8
  • The worthless heart–10:20
  • The deceitful heart–12:20
  • The anxious heart–12:25
  • The merry, joyful, cheerful, glad heart–14:13, 15:13, 15:15, 17:22, 27:9
  • The proud/haughty heart–16:15, 21:4, 18:12
  • The perverse heart–6:14, 18, 11:20, 12:8, 17:20
  • The bitter heart–14:10
  • The tranquil/peaceful heart–14:33
  • The angry heart–19:3
  • The pure heart–20:9, 22:11
  • The foolish heart–22:15
  • The troubled heart–25:20
  • The wicked heart–26:21
  • The hard heart–28:14

Proverbs 28:26 in the NASB reads, “He who trust in his heart {self} is a fool.” This brought to my mind Jeremiah 17:5,“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.” You cannot leave out verse 9 in this conversation: The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.Who can understand it? Don’t trust your heart; it will deceive you. Do not follow your emotions; they will misguide you. Base all decisions on God’s word, the leadership of the Holy Spirit, prayer and the counsel of good Christian friends.

Have you ever followed your heart and got what you wanted only to discover later, it really wasn’t what you wanted. Learn from the experience and stop trusting the heart. It is totally unreliable. Notice, Jeremiah mentions the basic sin that goes all the way back to the garden,“Turning away from the LORD.”
