Weeds In The Garden

Scripture

Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants.

~Matthew 13, 7, NLT

When our vitality for life is choked by worldly cares; it is usually our fault.

~Calvin Miller

Every gardener will tell you, the number one problem is unwanted grass and weeds. I like roundup ready sweet corn but it is $110 per pound and that is too rich for my blood. My friend Jimmy Newby use to give me enough for a couple of rows but with his passing, I lost my supply and last year I planted sweet corn that was not round up ready. When I tried to spray the middles with roundup, it all but killed my corn. Without a herbicide, gardening is a chore. My old friend Luther Roberts stayed in his garden 60 hours a week but I don’t have that kind of time. When a weed cropped up in Luther’s garden, he was there to pull it up. Weeds will do damage unless they are removed and removed promptly. The strange thing about weeds is–you don’t have to plant them, they just come up and they are super aggressive. Weeds are intruders. They don’t need an invitation; they just show up, show out and eventually take over.

There is a solution; when you spot a weed, pull it up by the roots and cast it into a fire. You don’t just pull it up. A weed with a little soil clinging to the roots will sprout and grow again with the next rain. Weeds are hardy and it takes a lot to kill them. Think of you mind as a garden and weeds as evil thoughts. When I say evil thoughts, I mean thoughts of hopelessness, despair, darkness as well as impure thoughts. If we don’t make a conscience effort to remove those thoughts, they will eventually dominate our thinking and that will affect our decisions. Just as weeds can corrupt a garden, negative thoughts can corrupt the mind. Any thought that produces a root of bitterness is evil and must be pulled up immediately. Martin Luther said, “You can’t stop a bird from flying over your head but you can keep it from building a nest in your hair.” Rebuke all evil and prideful thoughts immediately.

Busy schedule today: too much happening and no way to be in two places at once. We will be leaving in a moment for Carolyn Wallace mothers visitation. She was a sweet lady. I got to know her when June was Carolyn’s daddy’s nurse in Home Health. Then we are attending the RAISING OF THE CROSS and then from there to HH to visit Melania Mitchell. Have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
