Is Your Past Behind You

Scripture

One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

~Philippians 3:13-14, NIV

The past has a way of catching up to you.

We were coming home from the mid-week service Wednesday night, and we were on 36, between Too Tall’s and Poor House Road. It is one of those long straight stretches and I met a car that flicked his lights on me. I looked down and I was doing 65 so I immediately slowed down. He hit his breaks and found a road where he could turn around. Thank goodness there was a lot of traffic and it took him a minute to get turned around. We were going to turn right on Tapscott road and check on our new great grand boy, but I was watching the trooper in my rear view, it was not pleasant. He never turned his blue light on but he was gaining. I thought, “Great, just what I need, another $300 donation to the State of Alabama.” There are some hills on 36 and everytime I crested a hill I hit the excellerator and tried to create some distance but he kept gaining on me. It was nerve racking.

In Billy Graham’s daily devotion {February 27} he asks the question: DO YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT YOUR PAST IS BEHIND YOU? That is a thought provoking question for me. I know it is behind me but at times I get anxious that it will catch me. In some ways, I would like to forget my past. I don’t want my entire past erased, just the sin. I would like to keep all the good memories. If God completely erased our past, we wouldn’t have much of a life in the present. This begs another question: will we remember this life when we get to heaven? Maybe a part of heaven is forgetting the bad and remembering the good.

Keith and Judy visited us at Grace Point Wednesday night. Keith built us a new communion table that matches our new sanctuary and after the service, I was telling Charles {A carpenter} that he needed to see Keith’s carpenter shop. Keith spoke up and said, “Yeah, Brother Jack layed it out formed it, and did the concrete.” I said, “Are you sure, I don’t remember doing it.” He said he was sure and Judy was there to back him up. I am not kidding, I do not remember doing it. But I do remember the first time I meet Keith and I remember the first egg sandwich that Judy fixed me. The memory is a funny thing. Why do we remember somethings and forget others?

By the way, the State Trooper didn’t catch me. Matter of fact, he passed as I turned and it was a car like his {we saw him going out}. It was one of those low squatty cars like a mustang or camero, but it was solid white. I don’t know why he flicked his lights at me or turned around, but I breathed a deep sigh of relief when I saw him go by with no spinning blue lights. I hate blue lights.

Maybe there is a moral to this story: I am not sure. Maybe my past will not catch me after all. If it does not, Jesus gets all the credit. Hey, I am more than glad to give Him the credit. Maybe a part of heaven will be recalling the good but having no memory of the bad.
