The Balm Of Gilead

Scripture

Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?

~Jeremiah 8:22, NIV

Quote

In the quiet echoes of His Word, wounds find their balm, and hearts find their rest.

I read Psalm 16 last Sunday morning. It was like standing in the healing rain that Michael W. Smith sings about: I could feel the soothing effect of the Psalm pouring over me like the anointing oil of Aaron. This doesn’t happen to me that much and I soaked it up. David refers to the LORD as his refuge 43 times in the Psalms. It is an oft quoted refrain.

  • Psalm 2:12-Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.
  • Psalm 5:11-Let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.
  • Psalm 7:1-LORD my God, I take refuge in You.
  • Psalm 9:9-The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
  • Psalm 11:1-In the LORD I take refuge.
  • Psalm 16:1-Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.
  • Psalm 17:17-You who save by your Right Hand {Jesus} those who take refuge in You.
  • Psalm 18:30-The LORD‘s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.

This is just the first eighteen but this metaphor of God’s protection is throughout the Psalms. Many times we experience things that we cannot articulate. I wish I could describe what I felt Sunday morning when I read Psalm 16, but I cannot. Just let me say the Psalms have a healing effect on my soul. I’ve never used any of the balm from Gilead so I can only imagine how thrilled a person with aches and burns would be to get their hands on this famous medication. I couldn’t wait to get to the office today to get into the Balm of Gilead {Word of God}.

I got my steps in yesterday: I picked up limbs from the storm we had yesterday morning early. We got another flood here at 1120 Iron Man. Wind blew our big tomatoes to the ground so I got them staked. It also blew down some of the young corn. I met a young truck patcher from Fairview last night and he said that Christmas lights will keep coon out of the corn. String them about one foot off the ground. I will try it. We have our first squash, a record for us. First time we ever had squash in May.

Unfortunately, they are predicting bad weather for tonight and three of our highschools were planning to have graduation. I am told that a decision will be made later today and that the three schools involved will have their graduation exercises Wednesday night at 7:30. Josh had already planned for us to meet at 6:00 this Wednesday instead of 6:30. So we may have a brief prayer meeting and go home. We have two graduating at Danville. I will get Cindy to send an email as soon as I know what they decide.

I hope you have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
