God Is Spirit

Scripture

God is a Spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in Spirit and Truth.

~John 4:24, Geneva Bible

Quote

God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

~Westminster Shorter Catechism

Billy Graham’s mother, Morrow Coffey Graham, was a Presbyterian and she taught Billy the Westminster Shorter Catechism when he was a child. Billy became a Southern Baptist later in life, but he was raised as a Presbyterian. I find that very interesting. Jesus became man as the son of Mary and has a body but God the Father is Spirit without body. You cannot see Him, no man has seen Him for He is spirit. But as Spirit, He has being, personality and power. He is not limited in any way. A body can be at only one place at one time but God is omnipresent; He can be everywhere at the same time. God has no limits, no boundaries, no shape or size. He is immeasurable, indiscernible, unimaginable, and incomprehensible. He hears all, He sees all, He knows all and rules over all.

The Old Testament word for Spirit is Ruach [wind]. Jesus used the wind to illustrate the truth about God when he spoke with Nicodemus. You can’t see wind. You cannot draw it on paper, but wind is real. You feel it hitting your face, you see the trees swaying, but you can’t see it. It is proof that invisible things are real. To deny the reality of something simply because you cannot see it is foolish. Have you ever seen oxygen? It keeps you alive. Have you ever seen pain? Has your doctor drawn you a picture of pain? No, he has not but pain is real. I’ll bet you never seen a germ. Do you believe that germs are real?

The fact that you can’t see God does not mean He is not real. We are because He is and don’t you forget it.

What about Washington’s rules for civility? That is some kind of list, is it not? I got it first from the Patriots Bible and then to keep from typing it out, I found it on ChatGPT and copies and pasted.

Normal service tonight at Grace Point. We will be in Philippians 2:12-18, “Shining Lights In a Dark World.” A week from today is when we have the ice cream supper and Josh’s farwell party. Lincoln got his surgery rescheduled. It will be in August. Charity Clark is better. Keep praying for all our cancer warriors.

I think John MacArthur was promoted yesterday. Forty years ago, I would have agreed with practically everything he said but he went to the extreme on election in his later years which is the tendency. Earlier in life he believed in both the sovereignty of God and the free will of man. He was a highly intelligent man. He also took a stand when the government tried to shut down churches during covid. He has the best sermon on alcohol that I’ve ever heard.

Have a good day and thanks for reading the blog.
