Scripture
Surely I have soothed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
~Psalm 132:2, LSB
Quote
I believe God created sports for a good reason, but don’t allow it to become your god.
~Luke Scott
Time plus the providence and grace of God have a way of changing us. An infant on the breast cries for milk but in time, the infant will become a child who sits at the table and enjoys mashed potatoes, gravy, steak and fried okra, etc. Once you get use to steak, you have no desire to go back to milk. There was a time in my life when I craved sports. I watched the NBA, the NFL and the MLB plus college football and basketball. I watch very little these days. I have not seen an NBA game is 25 years or more. I quit watching the NFL when they shafted Tim Tebow. For the first time since I was in high school, I didn’t listen to or watch a single Major League baseball game. This was not a plan or a spiritual discipline, it is purely a loss of interest. When I was a teenager, I listened to the Astro via a station in New Orleans. Those were the days of Rusty Staub and Jimmy {the Toy Cannon} Winn. This past year there was just no excitement about baseball. I have not watched a complete Alabama game this fall and I will not watch tomorrow night {too late}.
I think this is all a part of God’s plan. He is graciously and gently weaning us off of the things of this world. He is moving us from the shallow, trivial, mundane, sensual, fleshly and temporal to something that is much more filling. Worship is more exciting than a ball game. Scripture is more exhilarating than TV. Quiet time is more thrilling than a vacation. Some of you young people are muttering “impossible, I will never get tired of going.” Maybe not but the odds are not in your favor. Time plus the providential grace of God has a weaning effect.

I don’t know who loves are electronic rain gauge the most, June or myself? Last night at supper, June said, “It is going to rain within the hour.” I said, “how do you know?” She said, “The rain gauge says so.” Sure enough within the hour we got a rain. I took a chair and sat in front of the window watching the little gauge fill up.
Today is our 49er luncheon and I am excited. We have had some outstanding meals lately; better than TOP OF THE RIVER. Except for the chicken {Ma Krogers}, it is better than DOT’S in Hillsboro. You don’t believe me, check it out. If you are a first timer, you don’t have to bring anything. Everywhere, in every church and community, you have a group that does not want to be identified as SENIOR ADULTS and they will not attend anything they consider a Senior Adult meeting. This is vanity and pride. If you are not a senior, you should support them. We had 38 last month which is not bad for a little country church. Check us out at 190 Eva Road right across from the Brewer Football Stadium.
Have a great weekend, thanks for reading the blog.
