Dog Eat Dog World

Scripture

My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied.

~Psalm 59:14-15, NLT

Quote

As good men in concert make one another better; so bad people in concert make one another worse.

~Matthew Henry

David was married to Saul’s daughter Micah and they had an apartment separate from Saul’s palace. Jonathan and David were unaware, but Paul put out a contract on David’s life and sent the assassins to eliminate him. David found out about the plot and Micah let him down through a window. She made it appear that he was in his bed, sick and asleep. When the men came to get David, she said he can’t be disturbed right now, come back later. Of course, Saul sent them right back and told them to kill him in his bed or bring the bed and he would kill him. This what inspired this Psalm.

David had done nothing to hurt Saul. Matter of fact, Saul was impotent before the Phlistines and David was always victiorious over them. So David, as Saul’s general is Saul’s most effective weapon against his enemies. Saul has surrounded himself with some unprincipled men and they are looking for David to do him in. David compares them to a pack of dogs roaming the streets, going through garbage, prowling and howling. Dogs were not valued in that society the way they are today. Rarely was a dog a pet and if so it would indicate great wealth: they were used to herd sheep, cattle, goats and to hunt and serve as watch dogs. In that world where hunger was common, no one would feed a dog unless they were of value to them.

David is not complimenting these guys. To call a man a dog was a slur. The wild dog ran in packs and were a menace to the community. They were destructive and fit for nothing other than to growl, howl, prowl and destroy property. These dogs had no sense of value. No appreciation for the good things. They lived to satisfy their appetites. Self-preservation was the instinct that drove them. They would turn on each other in a heart beat.

Unfortunately, this is the world we live in: most folks have no sense of values. They have no use for Jesus, and the Bible means nothing to them; nor does the church. They are like Esau, they follow their appetite. They do as they please and go from one thing to another and yet are never satisfied. They mock and belittle sacred things. They go with the highest bidder and are driven by greed. They have no class or principles. What they were attempting to do to David was immoral and very wrong but they didn’t care. We live in a broken world with pain and suffering everywhere and at followers of Christ, we must care. Who can you care for today?

June let me sleep late so I am running behind already. Good day yesterday, I have no complaints. I got mixed up on the FAITH QUARTET booking and they showed up yesterday when I had them down for next Sunday. It was all my fault, I got the dates confused but it worked out perfectly. Blake enjoyed them and he can’t be at worship next Sunday. We had a good crowd also and I enjoyed the rest. We did Psalm 37 at DBC last night. We will be back in Philippians 2 this Wednesday night and LORD willing my infamous sermon GOD IS GREAT, JESUS IS GOOD AND PEOPLE ARE CRAZY next Sunday.

Christy is getting to come home today we think: we are not positive about that. Charles Sanford is not doing well at all.

Well it is hot and dry and I don’t like either. I think I might be able to get the Gravely in the ditch this evening. Have not been able to cut the ditches all year due to rain. Days like yesterday will dry it up in a hurry. Don’t kid yourself, squirrels love corn and can do as much damage as coons. We have killed three but they are still eating us out of house and home.

I hope you have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
