From The Gutter-Most To The Utter-Most

Scripture

Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice!

~Psalm 130:1, NKJV

Quote

An humble man is always at an advantage: no one can despise him more than he depises himself.

~Henry Scougal

I try to preview my next days Psalm on the night before. The other night I read Psalm 130, a pentential Psalm, and the Spirit was heavy on me. I kept reading and reading again: it seemed like every word was speaking to me. Then I read Matthew Henry’s commentary. I was extremely impressed by his opening paragraph. The following is not a quote, it is a paraphrase from Henry’s commentary.

Whatever condition we find ourselves in, be it ever so deplorable, let us continue to cry out to the LORD. May we never cease praying. Even great men suffered affliction and at times were at their wits end. Some fought fierce battles with depression and were on the brink of despair, but in this dark hour they took advantage of our greatest privilege and they cried out to God in prayer.

  • Jeremiah cried out from the bottom of a pit, a deep cistern filled with mud and mire.
  • Daniel cried out from a den of lions.
  • Jonah cried out from the belly of a huge fish.

All were low but in each case the LORD lifted them up and out. Reminds me of the words of David in Psalm 40, He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock,
and established my steps. So whatever your situation–Pray! In Jeremiah 38:11, the bible tells us that a black eunuch named Ebed-meleck made a rope out of rags and pulled Jeremiah the prophet out of the pit. What are the ropes that lift us up out of the miry clay? I see five in this Psalm 130:

  1. God’s mercy
  2. God’s forgiveness
  3. God’s word
  4. God’s faithful love
  5. Our Redemption in Christ

God being holy, as He is, and we being sinners, as we are, there is no hope a part from Redemption. There is an infinite gap or abyss between God’s holiness and our sin. The Cross is the bridge from ourside to His. I must need go by the way of the CROSS, there is no other way but this…I will never get sight of the gates of light if the way of the CROSS I miss.
