Sweeter As The Days Go By

I think a lot lately about the hymn “At Calvary”.

Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died on Calvary
By God’s Word at last my sin I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned to Calvary
Now I’ve giv’n to Jesus everything,
Now I gladly own Him as my King,
Now my raptured soul can only sing of Calvary
Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span At Calvary!
I was saved at age nine, but I had very little if any understanding about grace. I grew up in a Christian home, and rarely missed Sunday School or worship. My folks went Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night and to every special meeting. As the old boy said, “I was at church so much, I had to learn to sin at church.” I grew up thinking I was not that bad. I was full of vanity and pride. It wasn’t that I thought little of Jesus; it was that I didn’t understand all that was in me. It was years later {in my twenties} that God begin to work in me, revealing to me my depravity and my wretchedness. I came to realize that many of the good things I was doing, I was doing for vain reasons. Over a period of time, God turned me inside out and I saw my self and sin in a whole new light.
I do love the word of God. It speaks to my need and to my longing. Yes, it does convict me but it is also my greatest comfort. The most exciting thing I do daily is study the word. For years, at least twenty, I have been trying my best to come up with a better word than amazing to describe God’s grace. It is amazing: I can’t find a better word. God’s word is amazing. It is incredible. I read it then pause, lean back in my chair and say WOW! So day before yesterday, after reading several chapters in Weymouth, I felt a refreshing sweetness pour over my soul. Then the song SWEETER AS THE DAYS GO BY came to mind and I played in on YouTube. I am telling you folks, my relationship with Jesus gets sweeter as the days go by. Aging causes some things to diminish but not your fellowship with Jesus. It gets better and better.

It is like the old boy who was tongue tied but he loved to testify. Everytime the pastor would have a testimony service, he would pop up like a jack in the box and say the same thing every time. “Its getting tweeter and tweeter.” That’s all he would say and then he would sit down. He started having some problems and had to go to the doctor. The doctor diagnoised him with diabetes. Everyone in the entire congregation could not wait until the next testimony service. What would he say? Well he popped right up just as always and this is what he said, “I’ve been telling you folks it was getting tweeter and tweeter but I didn’t know it was going to turn to tuger.” {You don’t have to laugh Jason, its old and corny}

For you folks at the Point, Jason is one of my disciples. He is a faithful prayer partner and a staunch conservative. I don’t have any liberal disciples. He is the age of my children and he never laughs at my jokes. I don’t know which is more fun: telling the corny joke are watching Jason and Joe David react. Joe David usually bows his head, covering his face with his hands and Jason just makes a low disgruntled sound.

Love this weather. Got a lot on my plate today. This week off has turned out not to be a week off.

Charity Clark, not to be confused with Christy, got a good report yesterday. She and Josh were thrilled.

Talked to Rick Freeman yesterday and David is still battling. Pray for David and Amanda Mote. David is battling colon cancer. Amanda teaches in the Hartselle system. I am not sure which school. They are really up against it.
