Temptation

Scripture

Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on.

~Proverbs 4:14-15, ESV

Scripture is the best antidote to lustful temptation.

The Bible is a law book; it gives us a guide to live by, but it is also a history book and it reveals to us the consequences of sin. The consequences for adultery are detailed in scripture. The devil tends to target leaders and his goal is to destroy their credibility: sexual temptation and sin is a good way for him to take gifted leaders down. In one act of selfishness, a person can lose their self-respect, the respect of others, their reputation, family, testimony, joy, career, integrity, health and in some cases, their life. David is the classic example: he lost self-respect, integrity, reputation, testimony, joy and his family. He did retain his life, such as it was, but the devil stole the best part of his life–joy, contentment and peace. Those who think David picked up the pieces, brushed himself off and lived happy ever after have not read the Bible or else didn’t pay attention to what they read.

Realize your limitation and remember what Jesus said to Peter, “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” Don’t trust your flesh. Don’t think that you are strong enough to flirt with temptation. You are flirting with a rattlesnake and sooner or later you will get bit. The key to winning the battle over temptation is AVOID it. Don’t put yourself in difficult situation. Anyone who persist in walking on a muddy bank will slip and fall eventually. Make no prvisions for the flesh. Avoid people and situations that make you vulnerable. Paul said to Timothy, “Flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness.” There is no sin in avoiding evil and all the things that go with it. The key is to understand the destructive nature of sin. Sin can wipe us out. Accept the fact that you and I cannot handle excessive temptation; sooner or later, we will bit the dust. When that happens, Humpty-Dumpty has fell off the wall and all the kings horses and all the kings men, can’t put Humpty together again. Avoid temptation when possible. Flee immorality. Joseph said no and then ran; it’s not a bad plan.

Sorry I am late. I got lazy yesterday. I got in about 4:00 and put on my PJ’s and crashed in the den. I should have returned to the office. Big Mama says more rain today. As Keith would say, “Unbelievable.” I bet we have had 5 inches this week. We got another deluge yesterday. Plants can drown just like people. I can’t believe it, our tomatoes are growing like crazy. June is a basketball month: Ty has three games today. Thank goodness they are at Danville.

Huge crowd at Donna Smith’s visitation and COLS. Pray for Mrs. Helen and family. I think she told me she was 89 which reminds me: Ramona Easton’s {Joe’s wife} passed away Sunday and her service is tomorrow at 11:00, at Pecks I think. Joe David will be doing the COLS.

I don’t know if it came from the Blog family but I got a very encouraging card last week with some sweet words of encouragement and some cash. If you sent it, I want you to know I got it. I appreciate it more than you know.
