The Curse Of The Sword

Scripture

Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised Me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

Grace does not mean that sin does not matter.

Reading through 2 Samuel and the life of David. There is no one in scripture like David. Trust me, he is no Job, Joseph or Jeremiah. When it comes to giftedness, he is probably number one among all Bible characters but when it comes virtue or moral purity, he is the poster child for grace. He was a super gifted musician and one of the greatest poets to take up a pen. He was a military genius and a courageous soldier in his youth. Both his prayers and praise songs are outstanding. In many ways he was the greatest king in Israel’s sorted history. All that said, he had some glaring weaknesses. He was a lust hound who married every pretty woman he met. He was a horrible father. He exercised no discipline over his children. He had a poor relationship with most of his sons. What I am saying is that he failed at home and no man can consider himself a success who fails with his own family.

There have been many that followed his example by lusting for another man’s wife and taking her. Unfortunately, few of them have read all of 2 Samuel. David had to pay for his sins. He had to reap a bitter harvest. He did not die as a happy old man. I don’t know how old he was when he took the roll in the hay but he was only seventy when he died and that is not old. Nathan told him, “The sword will never depart from your house,” and it didn’t. David would attend the funeral of three sons. Absalom would hunt him like an animal and chase him out of Jerusalem. David was a shrewd politician and always managed to come out on top; he retained his crown by intrigue but lost his son. I can see a man envying the David of pre-bathsheba years, but you would have to be a fool to want his like after his affair with her. It is all down hill. No more lions, bears or Goliath stories. No more victories in the field. No more harp playing under a canopy of stars. Every sin has a consequence: think before you drink. You cannot do what David did without suffering the same consequences. Read your Bible, all of it!

Beautiful morning; the stars are shinning brightly. It is cool but not cold. There was no wind when I came to the office. Today is a big day at GRACE POINT; we have our 49er luncheon and the last few have been outstanding. This is our last regular meeting of the year. We had 38 at our last one. That is not bad for a little country church.

We will not get to attend due to the conflict but Charity’s COLS is today at 11:00. Still hard to believe. She was a youthful 43 years old and one year ago she was on stage at DBC as a part of the praise team. She had a beautiful soprano voice and could play the piano or key board. I think she excelled in band in high school. She is survived by her husband Josh and two sons. She also has one brother and one sister and her parents are still living.

They say rain and cooler weather are on the way. It has created a problem for the DBC Trunk-A-Treat which is scheduled for Sunday night. They may have to move it to November 2. I don’t think they have decided.

Have a great Friday and weekend. Thanks for reading the blog.
