The Paradox Of Our Faith

Scripture

Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything.

~2 Corinthians 6:10, NLT

Quote

“Christianity is a religion of paradox: the infinite becomes finite, the immortal dies, the righteous takes on sin, the servant becomes the King.”

~G.K. Chesterton

Is the Christian life easy or hard? The answer is yes; it is both hard and easy. In Matthew 11:30 Jesus says, “For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” In Matthew 16:24 He says, “If any man comes after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow Me.” The Christian life is easy in the sense that Jesus bears the greatest burden and we are carried along by His grace; that is as long as we are in the yoke with Him. The Christian life is hard when it comes to denying self. Do you know anyone who denies self completely? Didn’t think so; neither do I. Jesus is the only exception. Speaking of paradoxes, I love the passage in 2 Corinthians 6…We serve God:

  • Whether people honor us or despise us
  • Whether they slander us or praise us
  • Weather they call us honest or impostors
  • Whether we are ignored or recognized
  • We live close to death, but we are still alive
  • We have been beaten, but we have not been killed.
  • We are hurting inside, but we always have joy
  • We are poor, but we enrich others
  • We own nothing, but yet we have everything.

Bill Stafford said, The devil couldn’t do business with Paul. If the devil said, “Serve me and I will give you something for your service.” Paul would say, “No thanks, I already have everything.” If the devil said, “OK, if you don’t serve me, I will take something.” Paul would laugh and say, “You can’t, I don’t have anything.”
