Trash Talk

Scripture

What god of any nation has ever been able to save its people from my power? So what makes you think that the Lord can rescue Jerusalem from me?”

~2 Kings 18:35, NLT

Quote

“Trash talk isn’t just noise—it’s psychological warfare. It’s about getting in your opponent’s head, making them doubt themselves before the game even starts.”

During the exile, the Babylonians taunted the Jews. One of their favorite taunts was, “Where is your God?” In Daniel Estes commentary on Psalm 115, he mentions the fact that ‘Trash Talk’ is ancient. It is really not a new thing but has been around for awhile. Sennacherib, the Assyrian Dictator was the king of trash talk. The verse above is him taunting the folks in Jerusalem. I am old school and I don’t like trash talk, but I must admit I have been guilty of doing this thing I hate on a couple of occasions. I have repented and I pray that I will never be guilty again.  After giving it so deep thought, I am convinced that trash talk is demonic. The devil is the origin or sourse of all trash talk. First of all, it is a form of boasting. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4:7, What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift? If you have more ability than your opponent, it is because God gave it to you. Boasting comes from our pride and pride is anti-Christ.

Yet there is another reason that I am convinced that trash talk is of the devil. Trash talk is a form of pychological warfare; it’s intent is to destroy the confidence of your opponent. The trash talker is trying to get into your head and the goal is to get you doubting yourself. How can this be Christian. People say cruel things to kids under the guise of competition but I can assure you that Jesus was not a trash talker. As followers of Christ, we are to edify and build up, not discourage and tear down. There is no way to justify trash talk; it is demonic.

There are some things I miss about the old days. Can you imagine a kid trash talking with the Bear on the side line. It might happen once but it would not happen twice. There would be no pony tails hanging out of helmets either. Trash talk is bad, discipline is not.
