Wisdom Among The Aged

Scripture

Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?

~Job12:12, NIV

Live and learn; die and forget it all.

The culture we live in is a little mixed up. Young people want what it took their parents years to accumulate; they want a big house, a high paying job and yet they have little or no experience. Those is middle age aren’t much better, they are head of heels in debt trying to keep up with the Jones’. They brag about working out; take up jogging and try to dress like teen agers. Some of them even get a convertible, but gyms, makeup, mini-skirts and sports cars will not make you younger. Act your age. Old folks like myself keep talking about heaven, but we keep going to doctors. When you get my age, you don’t need to go to a gym, you will get a work out from going to doctors. But we have lived a long time and we have learned many things the hard way. We have lots of advice but no one wants to hear it.

I don’t get upset with my children or grandchildren for not listening to me. I didn’t listen to my father. I can remember wanting a house, a big house. I wanted to own property so I could pay property tax. When I saw something I wanted, I pretended to pray about it, but truth is, I was too anxious and usually found a way to get it whether I could afford or not. It takes time to acquire wisdom and to learn to wait on the LORD. My daddy dropped out of school shortly after his father was killed in a logging accident. I think he finished the 9th grade. He could read a little and his spelling was worse than mine if you can believe it, but somewhere along the way he acquired wisdom. He tried to tell me some things but I didn’t listen. He was trying to spare me from making some costly mistakes. The only problem was, at the time, I didn’t have enough sense to know his advice was good.

Being old is not that bad. I do admit that most things don’t work like they use to, and things that were once easy as pie are now very difficult, like bending over and tying my shoe. Yet there are some positives. I am content where I am and with what I have. I like restaurants like TOP OF THE RIVER, but I will just have my bologna sandwich, thank you. I don’t even want to ride with you to Gunterville. If they would move the restaurant to this side of Hartselle, I would go once a week. Pay attention to old folks: they have learned by experience.

God is good. He was very gracious to me yesterday and I praise HIM! We are getting a good rain as I speak: PTL! Christy was resting yesterday and enjoying the company of her mom and brother. We need to remember Christy’s mom in our prayers: she is suffering too. David Mote is worse. Bringing in a hospital bed today. He is too weak to stand. Pray for Amanda and family. Our very good friend Willard Garnett has a brother on the vent in Madison. His name is Mike. He is 72 and has pulmunary fibrosis. He is in critical condition. Mike is a good guy and a faithful member of the Lebanon Baptist Church. Joe David was at the hosptial form lunch to the evening service and I was there from 2:00 till 5:00 myself. There are sick people everywhere. Pray for the sick and those attending them.

Joe David and I are headed to Birmingham at 9:00 this morning. One of my mother’s brothers departed this world and we are going to the COLS. She has one brother left. I am scheduled to go back to Birmingham Wednesday to see a stomach doctor but June is going to try to get me in at Cullman in June. Two trips to Birmingham in a week is too much.

Have a great day! Thanks for reading the blog.
