Scripture
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
~Isaiah 53:5, NIV
Quote
If we felt the full burden of our sins in their true weight, it would crush us.
~J. I. Packer
I am in total agreement with Packer and this is something I believed very strongly long before I read the quote above. You and I do not have the sensitivity to sin that Jesus had. Jesus was holy, pure inside and out. He was free of vanity and pride and He never had an ulterior motive. His entire life, every breath, was devoted to pleasing the Heavenly Father. The Jewish religious establishment was pure in their own eyes, but Jesus referred to them as vipers and snakes. Their righteousness stunk like the decay and corruption of a corpse. Their sin didn’t bother them, but it was obnoxious to Jesus. It is like those who don’t bathe, they are not offended by body odor, but those who bathe regularly are.
I know a lot of my sins; if necessary I could name quite a few but I don’t know them all. Not only do I not know them all, I am not capable of hating them with the same passion as Jesus. The more like Jesus we become, the greater our distaste for sin. My knowledge and hatred for sin in growing. Sin is losing its attraction to me. I find it more disgusting each day, but I still fall for short of the Man of Sorrows. Can you imagine the burden He carried into the garden? No wonder He fell on his face, the weight of our sins was crushing Him. Had that same pressure, that same amount of guilt been put on me, I wouldn’t not have survived the first prayer meeting. I am sure, it would have crushed me to death.
Thank God for our Burden Bearer, amen! {Isaiah 53} He…
- Bore our infirmities
- Carried our sorrows
- Wounded for our transgressions
- Crushed for our iniquities
- Beaten with many strips for our healing
- All our sins laid on Him
- Mistreated and abused
- Never defended Himself not demanded His rights
- Cut off in His prime {33 years}
- Died for our sins
- Treated like a criminal
- Plagued by our rebellion
- Made Himself an offering for sin
- His sacrifice was pleasing to the Father
- Poured out His soul unto death
- Counted as one of us {human}
- Bore all our sins
Man of sorrows, what a name, for the Son of God who came: ruined sinners to reclaim, Hallelujah, what a Savior!

June just came into my office, she said, “Your blog didn’t go through today.” I said, “There is a good reason, I forgot.” We started at 5:30 this morning with Breakfast and the Bible at Warehouse Coffee and I totally forgot about the blog. Sorry about the delay.
I am currently reading D.A. Carson’s book, PRAYING WITH PAUL and it is very convicting. I almost wish I had not started reading it. I have been praying amiss as James said. One thing you see in all Paul’s prays is a heavy emphasis on Thanks giving. I may share more in an upcoming blog but for now I just want to thank you for being a blod reader and a prayer supporter. THANK YOU! I cannot say it often enough.
