He Wraps Himself In Light

Scripture

Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty, wrapped in light as with a garment.
~Psalm 104:1-2, NRSV

Quote

The LORD is my light and my salvation; in whom shall I fear or be afraid.

~King David

Psalm 104 is a magnificent hymn celebrating the glory and majesty of God the CREATOR and SUSTAINER of life. It is hard to imagine anything more absurd than what secular humanist teach about the origin of life. There basic statement of faith is–Nobody times nothing equals everything. Evolution is a joke, a hoax that has no support from the world of observable science. Those who reject the bible as the word of God and God as the Creator have more than a faith problem. They are in rebellion against God as Paul stated in Romans one and it leads to the worship of creation and self rather than the Creator. For the evolutionist, life is random and blind chance, devoid of purpose and meaning. This godless philosophy leads to extremes: one extreme is hedonism and the other is fatalism [stoic indifference, hardness, no emotions or feelings]. The great majority of those who reject God as Creator/Sustainer drift into hedonism. They live for the present, for this world only and their basic drive is pleasure. Psalm 104 is too majestic to cover in one blog. So today, we will extract one thought…God is… clothed with honor and majesty, wrapped in light as with a garment. The very popular praise song, “How Great Is Our God,” was inspired by Psalm 104.

Paul said in I Timothy 6:16,  It is He alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to Him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. Jesus taught us that God is Spirit and those who worship Him do so in Spirit and truth. David said in Psalm 104, You make the clouds your chariot, you ride on the wings of the wind,  you make the winds your messengers, fire and flame your ministers. According to these scriptures, if I have interpreted them correctly, God is metaphysical. You and I cannot see Him. Jesus explained this to Nicodemus, “The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”  It is the Hebrew word for wind or breath that is translated ‘Spirit.’ Light is a biblical symbol for truth but it also signifies ‘life.’ We find them together in John 1:4,  The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. No doubt, God is robbed in light and the giver and sustainer of life, all life, plant, animal and human. Light is also a symbol of purity or holiness which I believe has the greater emphasis in this passage. Light can touch decay, rot or filth but none of these corruptible substances can touch light. A dead cow laying in a creek can contaminate the water but it cannot effect the light. The sunlight can hit the carcass but the carcass cannot touch the light. Light is incorruptible. In Christ, God touched sin but sin never touched God. John said, “God is light. In Him there is no darkness.”

I know what you are thinking: God may not have any darkness in Himself but I have plenty in me. For your consolation, so do I and everyone else. This is where the gospel comes in, Jesus is the LIGHT and He dispels the darkness. Light is greater than darkness. Where ever there is light, there is no darkness for darkness is not actually a substance, it is merely the absence of light. In a nutshell, GRACE is greater than our sin, just as light is greater than darkness. Just make sure it HIS grace that you are relying on.

  • Murphy’s Law has been in play for me this week. First I drive through the yard Sunday and burst a water pipe. I decided to hire a plummer: he charged me $250 for an hour and a half. I had order June a new storm door for the front: went to install it yesterday morning: got almost finished and realized that there was no handle which means we can’t open the door unless we use a screw driver. I going to have to pack it back up to send it back. Sun was shinning here yesterday so I head to Athens to mow yards: about Bell Mina it came a flood. I felt like Jacob, “Everything is working against me.” I started to pull over and park, I was afraid someone was going to hit me head on. We had a crowd here at the house yesterday evening so I go back to my building to study in peace and quiet. Got carried away and forgot the time. As soon as I walked in the house June said, “You forgot Josie had a ball game didn’t you.” I’m afraid when I do see the light at the end of the tunnel, it will be a freight train.
  • LORD willing, we will be going to Oneonta today for Gary’s COLS.
