Laziness

Scripture

Lazy people irritate their employers, like vinegar to the teeth or smoke in the eyes.

~Proverbs 10:26, NLT

Quote

Laziness could run a competitive race for the most underrated sin.

~David Wyrtzen

Moses was not only a law giver, he was prophet. Three hundred years before the fact, he predicted the Israelites would asks for a king so they could be like other nations. Moses told the Israelites [Deut. 17] what to do when this happened. Then Moses laid down the laws for the king:

  1. He must be God anointed
  2. He must be an Israelite
  3. He must not build up a large stable of horses
  4. He must not negotiate with Egypt
  5. He must not take many wives
  6. He must not acumulate large quantities of silver and gold
  7. He must have a scroll {torah, law} in his presence when he was on the throne
  8. He must have a levitical priest to read and intepret the scroll [law]
  9. He must have the Torah/law read to him daily
  10. His judgments must be based on the law
W.W. Wiersbe

You look at this list and tell me how many of the ten Solomon honored. If you said the first two, you would be correct. He violated all the others. You know I am not high on Solomon, he was Israel’s version of Abraham Lincoln but there is one thing I would never accuse Solomon of being, and that is lazy. Matter of fact, he has a lot to say about laziness in the Proverbs and none of it is good. I’m reading a couple of commentaries as I study the book of Proverbs and one is by Warren W. Wiersbe. Scholars would not recognize Dr. Wiersbe as being a scholar because primarily, he is a preacher. I would label him a scholarly preacher. I thought you would find his comments on LAZY PEOPLE very interesting and he has scripture to back every point. Here is his profile of a lazy person…

  1. Lazy people tend to be irritants, like smoke in the eyes. They are more of a nuisance than a help. [Proverbs 10:26, above] Also Proverbs 21:25… Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work.
  2. Lazy people are ‘know it alls’. Proverbs 26:16…Lazy people consider themselves smarter than seven wise counselors. They can tell you how to succeed when they have never succeeded themselves.
  3. Lazy people are good at making excuses. Proverbs 22:13…The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion out there! If I go outside, I might be killed!” Lazy people are irresponsible. Their misfortune is always someone else’s fault.
  4. Lazy people are freeloaders…Proverbs 13:4…Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper. I do not understand how people can be comfortable when someone else is providing for them.
  5. Lazy people prefer slavery to hard work. Proverbs 12:24...Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave. The democrats have created a new form of slavery; it’s called economic slavery. They have created a culture of dependents and dependency.
  6. Lazy people are horrible stewards of God’s resources. Proverbs 18:9… A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things. They make no effort to conserve or to preserve.
  7. Lazy people are horrible stewards of time and opportunity. Proverbs 10:4-5…Lazy people are soon poor…He who gathers in summer is wise, but the one who sleeps during harvest is a disgrace.

Here in America, most poverty is caused by laziness. I did not say all, I said most. I have been dealing with beggars for over 40 plus years and although it is not politically correct, I can profile them. They all smoke, drink, have cell phones, TV and the great majority have pets and cable or internet. In the 1950’s we gave them commodities but that wasn’t good enough: they didn’t want flower, meal, cheese and milk so we gave them food stamps. Within months of this new program, they were using the stamps for other things other than groceries. Now, they have credit cards. Government issued credit cards which they use at ATM machines and covert their so called grocery money in cash which they can use to buy their cigarettes and $5.50 per pack and beer.

In the old days, churches, schools and communities took care of the poor and these local entities could hold them accountable. We knew who was deserving of help and who wasn’t but then our big brother took over and now there is no accountability. The system is abused daily and nothing is done about it. If you say anything in protest, you are a bigot and a racist. Plus it takes the government 90 cents to give away a dime. Paul Harvey’s team did a study and they discovered that the overhead in government’s welfare system is 90%. Paul Harvey suggest that we do away with the department of welfare and just send everyone a check. It would save the tax payers some money.

Well folks, I have computer problems in my home office so tonight I am on a laptop which I don’t like because I prefer a 30 inch monitor. My big computer is acting up and I can’t seem to fix the problem. Mr. Hardy wants to go to the Graham service and we are giving it consideration so I do not know what the next couple of days will bring. I want to go, but I prefer to fly and my plane has not come in yet. When June showed me the pics of the streets being lined as they left the cove, I wanted to be in that number–so I am giving heavy consideration to going.
