The Year of Jubilee

Scripture

“When you make an agreement with your neighbor to buy or sell property, you must not take advantage of each other.”

~Leviticus 25:14

Quote

There are two kinds of people in the world: givers and takers. The takers eat better but the givers sleep better.

When the Israelites left Egypt, all were slaves. Their only possessions were their livestock and the goods they took from the Egyptians which was their gold, silvers, etc. In other words, the floor was balanced and everyone was in the same boat–starting from scratch. Somewhere along the way, this balance was broken and some of the Israelites became more wealthy than others. Debts had to be paid and so some Israelites sold themselves or their children into slavery. This was a common practice among them. The Jewish slaves were called servants but they were technically slaves. When families got behind, they were forced to sell their land. Moses saw all of this coming and so he created the Levitical Law of Jubilee. Every 50 years, the land reverts back to the original owners. So technically, you could not buy land, you could only lease it and not for more than 49 years. The LORD told Moses in Leviticus 25….

“The land must never be sold on a permanent basis, for the land belongs to Me. You are only foreigners and tenant farmers working for Me.”

There are not many in America or the Christian church who believe this verse or who live as if we believe this verse. I will go ahead and declare my convictions: the land, all the land belongs to God. So your name is on the deed, big deal, it is temporary. The land will revert back to the original owner. We, like the Israelites are God’s servants, tenant farmers, working for HIM.

No only did the land go back to the family and tribe that owned it, all Hebrew slaves were to be released on the year of Jubilee. A couple of thoughts to help you through the day:

  1. Christ is the great liberator. He is our go’el, our kinsmen redeemer. He is both willing and able to set us free from the bondage of sin.
  2. Christ will restore everything that sin and Satan has taken from us: His return will be the year of Jubilee.

My plans for today got changed last night: going to Athens on a MISSION PROJECT.

Three of the Eight in the Elite Eight are from the SEC. No wonder SEC teams didn’t have good records; they beat each other up. An SEC team will be in the final four but no more than two possible. I have the SEC at 9 wins and two loses in the tournament. No Big Ten team in the Elite Eight and only one ACC.

Prayer

Abba Father, we want to honor your name by pleasing YOU today. Give us the wisdom to take the right path. Help us to help others, not take advantage of them. Bless our worship tomorrow and our pastor. Bless those who are suffering distress. Bless the one reading this prayer. In Jesus name, Amen!
