Rock of Ages

Scripture

He is the Rock; His deeds are perfect, Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright He is!

~Deuteronomy 32:4, NLT

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

~C.S. Lewis

I am fascinated with the mother land and if I had the money and was not 76 I would like to go to the British Isles and visit some of the historic sites i read about. August Toplady wrote the hymn Rock of Ages. He lived in Blagdon, England. It is a small village located in the Burrington Combe, a valley surrounded by rock cliffs. Toplady is an interesting character to say the least, he was preaching by age 12 and began writing hymns at age 14 and at age 22 he was ordained as an Anglican priest. He did not like the Wesleys because they believed you could fall from grace. As he was walking outside the village near the cliffs, it came up a bad thunderstorm. He searched for shelter under the rocks and he found a place to stand where he was sheltered from the wind, rain and lighting. As he stood there under the safety of this massive rock, the words came to his mind…

“Rock of anger, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; let the water and the blood, from Thy riven side which flowed, be of sin a double cure, save from wrath and make me pure.”

August was promoted at the youthful age of 38 but his hymn continues to me a favorite among many. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert loved this hymn. They sang this hymn around Alberts death bed and at his COLS. It was also a favorite of William Gladstone, four time prime minister of Great Britain and by Charles H. Spurgeon the prince of preachers.

Slept good but woke up with a lazy spirit, got up and ate breakfast and then laid back down. Perfect weather, no complaints. Ty is in a Basketball Tournament and so is Josie. That will keep me busy the next two days. Plan to go to Athens this evening to visit the Jacobs family. I can’t make the service tomorrow. Steve Jacobs was a good man. He never made things about himself. He always put others first. He was a very gracious humble man.

Josh is preaching Sunday. We have a normal schedule: donuts and coffee at 8:30, Bible Study at 9:00 and worship at 10:15. God bless you; have a great day, and thanks for reading the blog.
