Scripture

Your laws are wonderful. No wonder I obey them! The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand
~Psalm 119:129-130, NLT

Quote

If the Israelites had obeyed God’s commandments, there is no imagining how much God would have blessed them.
~Ya’akov
This stanza contains a progression and everything begins with worship and obedience mentioned in verse 129-30. There are three reasons we obey and they too are progressions: [1] We obey out of fear. Little children obey parents and teachers only when there is some healthy fear. They don’t necessarily want to obey but they fear the consequences if they do not. [2] The second progression is for reward. We obey because we understand it will benefit us in some way. [3] The third and highest level of obedience is love. We obey because we not only respect the authority above us but we love him and we want to please him or her as the case may be. Read this entire stanza {129-136} and notice the progressions that begin with WONDER.
  1. WONDER {Worship} leads to OBEDIENCE [V.129]
  2. OBEDIENCE leads to UNDERSTANDING [v.130]
  3. UNDERSTANDING leads to PASSION {deeper desire} [v.131]
  4. PASSION leads to LOVE [v.132]
  5. LOVE leads to FREEDOM [v.133-34] {I don’t have to obey, I want to obey}
  6. FREEDOM leads to ABUNDANCE [v.135]
  7. ABUNDANCE leads to RESPONSIBILITY [v.136]

True worship is selfless and leads to obedience. Obedience leads to understanding. Jesus said in Luke 8:18, “To those who listen to my teachings, more understanding will be given, but for those who refuse to listen, even what they think they understand will be taken from them.” As we begin to understand just how good God is we begin to develop a passion for pleasing Him. This passion or love leads us into a new found freedom. We obey no longer out of fear but out of pure love: we actually want to obey. His commandments are no longer a burden but a privilege. This leads us into abundance. God bestows so much goodness and grace on us that we have a burden to share it. The Psalmist had a burden for those who were living in disobedience. Note verse 136…Rivers of tears gush from my eyes because people disobey your instructions.

Dr. Wiersbe makes a statement that I want to quote: If our enjoyment of God’s Word and God’s gracious blessings have truly reached our heart, then we ought to have a burden for the lost and want to try to reach them for Christ. I want to add one word: Amen!

  • WOW! Triple WOW! We had over 1,000 for Trunk-R-Treat last night. I was absolutely blown away. We grilled 710 hot dogs and we ran out. We have 12 crock pots of chili and we ran out. We have 600 can drinks and we ran out. We went after more drinks twice. We also had to go for more candy. I have never seen anything like it. We were only five hundred shy of a BLOCK PARTY crowd. Our parking lot was full and so was the middle school parking lot. Our previous record was 714 some 8-10 years ago.
  • Hillary was at Trunk-R-Treat and so was Trump. Bonnie and Clyde also showed up. I had my picture taken with Hillary and Trump.
  • I think we do need one change. I may bring it up at the next business meeting: all staff personnel stay and help clean up, not just Noah, Mandy and myself. I do want to commend Noah. I like his energy and enthusiasm. I don’t want to hear any complaining from anyone because I was give the dubious task of cleaning a stinky commode in the women’s bath room. I don’t know who the heifer was that dropped that bomb, the size of big cucumber, but I got no pleasure in removing it. By the grace of God we got’her done.
  • For the first time in a while, our calendar is clean. We had a very busy three months and I am thankful for every opt but I have also missed being at DBC. I am available if the LORD needs me but I’m going to leave that up to HIM. At this time, I am not asking for anything, just thankful for what He has given me.
