Sovereign Majesty

Scripture

The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The LORD thunders over the mighty sea.

~Psalm 29:3

“Unless men see the beauty and delight in the worship of God, they will not do it willingly.”

Psalm 29 was written by David who witnessed the awesome majesty of a thunder storm. This thunderstorm started over the Mediterranean Sea and then went East to Mount Hermon, then it turned South and went all the way to the Negev. David was impressed by the force and power of the storm. The lightening split large trees and the wind toppled the giant cedars of Lebanon. The claps of thunder were earth shaking. When David saw this majestic electrical storm, it was a theophony, an appearance of God. David’s response was to join the angels in heaven and give Yahweh glory and praise. Yahweh, the divine name is used 18 times in this Psalm and glory is found three times in the first three verses. It would be hard for us to have the same experience as David because we come from totally different cultures. In David’s time, Israel was surrounded by paganism and the pagan nations believed in territorial gods. Baal was especially popular and he supposedly was the god of rain and wind. I can almost hear David chuckle as he watches this massive storm take down trees and shatter rocks, “alright Baal, meet the real God.” Thunderstorms frighten us but this one lead David to worship. He gave glory and honor to God for being the King of creation and for ruling the elements. Jesus demonstrated this power when He was on the Sea of Galilee. Storms display awesome power but the God who created them is more awesome and He is to be praised.

Giving God glory is the primary reason we were created. Paul said in Romans 11, For everything comes from Him [Jesus] and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. All glory to Him forever! Again in 1 Corinthians 10:31, he says, So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. The one thing we have in common with the angels is that we exist to give God glory. We were created to worship Him and give Him pleasure. Oh, worship the King, all-glorious above, and gratefully sing His power and love; Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise. {William Kethe}

We had three Senior Birthdays yesterday: Kay Orr, Billy Parker and June Daphney Jones. We are going to have to quit having all the birthdays, it is making me feel old. Don’t forget our SENIOR ADULT FELLOWSHIP February 16. It will be here before you know. More snow coming on Ground Hogs Day. Enjoy these next few days because another arctic blast is on the way.

SHOCK, SHOCK…The NFL is at it again: A veterans group is criticizing the National Football League for refusing to allow its advertisement encouraging players and fans to stand during the national anthem to air as part of the Super Bowl broadcast.

A veterans group is criticizing the National Football League for refusing to allow its advertisement encouraging players and fans to stand during the national anthem to air as part of the Super Bowl broadcast. AMVets National Commander Marion Polk tweeted that the group will “not tolerate” the NFL’s censorship. The TV ad shows three service members holding an American flag and the hashtag #PleaseStand.

This is unbelievable. American Veterans, a non-profit group started by World War II servicemen, leapt at the opportunity to advertise in the official 2018 Super Bowl program but was shocked [they, not me] to find that their pitch had been rejected based on language within the ad.

The controversial words? “Please stand.”
