Tongues Like Swords

Scripture

Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the scheming of evildoers who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows, shooting from ambush at the blameless; they shoot suddenly and without fear.
~Psalm 64:2-4, NRSV

Quote

Truth forever on the scaffold, Wrong forever on the throne,— Yet that scaffold sways the future, and, behind the dim unknown, Stands God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.

~James Russell Lowell

Psalm 64 is another Psalm of David in which he requested God’s protection from his enemies. His enemies were poised and ready to do him in and this time, their weapons were ‘slanderous words.’ The old adage, “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me,” is not altogether true. The devil is an artist when it comes to misusing words: he is the father of the lie. The setting of this Psalm was during the time David worked in Saul’s court. David emerged as a national hero when he bravely challenged and defeated Goliath. Saul was  not the only one who became jealous of David’s success. David had climbed the ranks too fast and it was rumored that he would not stop climbing until he was king. Saul was not David’s only enemy; there were others in the court who were jealous.

The method David’s enemies were using was slander. It’s the same method the FAKE MEDIA is using in their attempt to bring down TRUMP [may they not succeed]. The slanderous prefer to shoot from ambush, a hidden protected place. They do not come out into the open. They lack the courage to confront their enemy face to face. Without fear of God’s judgment, they aim their slander and lies like poisonous arrows hoping never to be found out. Their goal is to destroy their enemy without direct confrontation.  They conspire, scheme and they look for opportunities to pervert the truth in subtle ways. They are good at covering their malicious motives. They are the masters of innuendo. They make subtle and suggestive remarks that are designed to throw they listeners off and get them on the wrong trail. Of course, when the opportunity presents itself, they are unafraid to use the lie. They love spreading rumors.

Some years ago, a young man from another community began attending DBC and after getting acclimated he came to me with a confession. “Bro. Jack, you are nothing like what I heard about you. I was told that you do not allow children to be baptized until they have read your book. I was also told that you wrote this book and that you are profiting from the sale of each and every book that you force parents to buy before their children can be baptized.” When he told me this outrageous lie, I sat down on the pew and laughed. You have to admit that whoever came up with this one was very creative. Although this case was amusing, I’m not making light of slander: it can be deadly and it is only the grace of God and His divine protection that has saved me. Slander is a serious offense.

Like David, I am fully confident that God will vindicate His servants. I can’t recall an instance where He did it immediately but in time God vindicates those who serve him. Let me give you an example: Jesus was mistreated when He was here on earth and He disrespected even today. This world system is against Jesus, it is Antichrist, they hate the sound of His name. They also persecute those who love and follow Him. Do you think God is asleep, that He is not watching. He hears every slanderous remark, every curse, every lie and every threat. He will vindicate His Son. He has not yet but He will. You can count on it. So the bottom line is this: you may grieve over the slanderous lie but you do not have to worry about these liars getting off Scott free, they will be found out. God will take care of them in due time.
