The Word and Prayer

Scripture

I pray with all my heart; answer me, LORD !

~Psalm 119:145, NLT

Quote

In prayer, it is better to have a heart with no words than words without heart.

~John Bunyan

When cannot pray effectively a part from God’s word. It is the word of God that reveals the will of God and we are to pray within His will. I think of it as a baseball diamond. You have your two fouls lines and every thing in between those lines is fair and everything outside those lines is foul. Foul praying is to pray outside God’s will: it is not productive. Dr. Wiersbe says, “All Bible and no prayer means light without heat: all prayer and no bible produces zeal without knowledge.” Prayer and the word go together like a horse and carriage. Note what the Apostle said in Acts 6:4, “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” More importantly, Jesus put the two together in John 15, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” When we study and meditate on the word, God speaks to us. When we bow for prayer, we speak to God. The Jewish priest had the altar of incense to help them in their praying but we have something greater: God’s Word and His Spirit.

Prayer does need to be more than asking. Prayer is communion with God. At times it may seem like work but it can also be worship. My father and I did not talk much until I was in my middle to late 20’s. As a child and a teenager, I avoided him whenever possible because all he thought about was work and I preferred play over work. After I matured a little, he began to confide in me. We had several heart to heart conversations that I treasure to this day. We talk to those we love and trust. One of the many ways we have to express our love for God is to talk to Him daily, actually throughout the day. Be honest with Him, share your heart. It makes no sense to try to deceive Him who cannot be deceived. Remember Hebrews 4:13, And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. You are free to talk with Him about anything: He knows what is on your mind and heart so be honest.

  • We have a wonderful PRAISE….the hay is gone!
  • REVIVAL begins Sunday. We meet tonight for prayer.
  • Great weather: just what the farmers need to get the crops gathered. Thank You Jesus for the sunshine.
  • PRAYER MEETING tonight at 6:30. Meet in the foyer. We need a burden to pray. Revival is always preceded with a burden to pray.
