Pearls Before Swine

Scripture

“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”

~Matthew 7:6, NASB

Pigs are by nature pigs. Hogs are not jewelers.

Sometimes I read a devotion and I realize immediately that it doesn’t need my spin: all I need to do is relate it to you. I am not a college professor, but the following paragraph comes from a man who was a highly esteemed professor. He says, many a young college student has been intimidated by a know-it-all professors who cleverly use their worldly wisdom to shred the Christian world view to pieces. Everything this child was taught at home and church is drug through the intellectual mud of pseudo-science. The unprepared student slumps down into their chair or desk hoping not to be noticed. The last thing they want is to be called out for being a Christian.

Take courage, I had such professors when I was in college and graduate school. There was sadistic glee in their assault on my faith in Christ. I survived but I often think of the damage done by such professors and what Jesus said in Luke 17, “It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.” Shame on anyone who would discourage a young person from believing. I tried to speak out when I was a student, but intellectually I was no match for these skeptical and sometimes, hypocritical professors. Here is the good news if you are a college student: you are not obligated to tell them anything about your faith and practice. It is really none of their business and besides, you would be casting pearls before swine. Hogs have no appreciation for pearls. They will stomp a pearl into the mud and then run over you if you don’t put some slop in their trough at once. Am I calling liberal professors’ pigs? Not really but they have no appreciation for spiritual things because they are carnal. They are doing what all carnal unbelieving people do. I love the word of God but a fleshly carnal man cares nothing for the word of God. Like a hog, they have tunnel vision, and their mind is on the world and the things in it.

So never feel guilty about not engaging a scoffer. You cannot talk to anyone about Christ until they get serious and realize their need. I will not tell you to never take on a crowd of scoffers, but it is probably not wise. Guard what is precious to you and silently walk away.
