Weeds Have No Future

Scripture

Though the wicked sprout like weeds and evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

~Psalm 92:7, NLT

Taking the path of least resistance makes both men and rivers crooked.

I preached Psalm 92 just a few weeks back but as I read it again,  I saw some things I had misses {imagine that}. Just let me say in passing, the WORD of GOD is always fresh like bread out of the oven and no one can exhaust the truth it contains. I love the New Living Translation but you have to understand, it is contextually based; it is not a word for word translation. This is why it reads like a commentary in places. Most literal translation use the word ‘grass’ in Psalm 92:7 but weeds fits the context. Weeds are bad, always and that is not true of grass. Most of us want grass in our yards; just not in the garden or the driveway. So what you have in Psalm 92 is a contrast between the wicked and the righteous, between weeds and trees.

The wicked are like weeds. They are not planted, they are not pleasant {to the righteous}. As a matter of fact they make life more difficult. They not only sprout up against our will, they cluster and they flourish. Weeds grow quickly. I am always amazed at how rapidly they grow. They are also relentless. You can weed your garden beds and in no time, they will need weeding again. The weeds sprout quickly and grow fast: they reach heights of three to four feet in no time. Now, contrast the weed with the tree. The tree is planted; it serves a purpose. The tree grows very slow; so slow that it is difficult to monitor its growth. But the tree grows long and strong. The tree gets stronger each day. I have a small oak that I planted in he front yard and I could remove it with my tractor in less than a minute. There is a pecan tree in the yard that is 75 years old and it would take me a month to remove it. Trees get stronger with age. Trees are productive; they can bear fruit. Even an old tree is filled with sap or vitality. Old trees can produce lots of fruit and their leaves stay green.

What do you do with weeds? Pull them up and burn them. Or today, we spray them with poison or plow them up with a tractor. Anyway you look at it, a weed has no future and no purpose. The ancients did use weeds for kindling to start their fires. Do you want to be a weed or a tree? Do you want to be useful or useless? Do you want to make life better for others or more difficult? Do you want to bear fruit that is helpful to others or do you want to be the source of more problems? Weeds beget weeds. The words of Jesus come to mind…“Just as the weeds are sorted out and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the world. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”

A heat wave has hit, it was 40 degrees at daylight this morning. Fed the grands and got them off to school. They all hate school with a passion. I think they hate it much worse than I did and I wasn’t fond of school. Josie told me this morning, “I wish Jesus would send an earthquake and destroy all schools.” Is it ok to love Jesus and hate school? I can tell you what is wrong with school in two words: federal government. They foul up everything they touch. If they would back off, we could fix education. I use to love lunch and recess but they have fouled the lunch room up too. On well, as Rooster Cockburn says, “It is what it is.”

Have a great day and thanks for reading the blog. Pray for June’s brother Dale {75} and down with covid. She is going to see him today.
