Good Old Fashioned Faith

Scripture

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

~Colossians 3:12, NIV

Quote

True transformation in Jesus is not a quick fix or a fad. It is a lifetime of quiet, gradual transformation into the likeness of Christ.

~ Monica La Rose [ODB]

I get tickled at folks, especially the older ones who try to keep up with the latest trend or fad. Shirt tails out, partially tucked in, holes is jeans, skinny pants or tights. I saw an older man dressed like a teenager just a few weeks ago. He will never see fifty again. I had an inner chuckle. It amazes me the things we do to convince ourselves that we are not aging. Listen folks, you can dye your hair, wear jeans with holes in them, drive a sports car and put substance in your hair but it want make you one day younger. There is something to be said for acting our age. I have a simply policy when it comes to clothes: be covered and comfortable. I could care less what the young people think or the world. They can take one look at me and know that I am old. It is a no-brainer, a pair of deplorable skinny jeans will not change the fact.

Seriously let me share something with you that I did not know until I read it. There is a movement on to slow fashions instead of giving in to fast fashions. These people say that the fashion industry is dominated by cheaply made and disposable clothing. The slow fashion movement encourages people to slow down. In fast fashion clothes are out of style almost as quickly as they made the stores.

Paul had a better idea; clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Fashions will not keep any of us young; neither will cosmetic surgery and face creams. At some point you have to face the fact that beauty is fleeting. Would you like to be attractive as you age–try Paul’s fashions. Put on kindness, gentleness and patience. I have a horrible figure and I cover it up as much as possible but no one cares about my figure. I have never been known for my physique. People recognize me by, and for my laughter and my determination to be me. Character will shine through when the old clay pot begins to crack. As Naola Bailey use to say, “Beauty is as beauty does.” If you act attractively, you will be attractive.

Back in the old, old days {I am ashamed to admit} I watched Knots Landing. It was basically a night time soap opera. There was a woman on that show who portrayed a beast and I am being nice. At first, before I knew her character, I thought she was attractive but she became a witch in my eyes because she acted like one. Character counts. Work on your character and people will be attracted to you. No one is attracted to vanity and pride. Put on humility and kindness.

Yesterday turned out to be wonderful. Sunshine and very little wind. I do give thanks for a good weekend and the opportunity to share the word of God. We had communion at the POIMT and it is always a blessing and we did a little celebrating at DBC last night. I loved every minute. Even the folks in the sound room were clapping.

I asks you to pray for Ken Nelson. Ken lead the praise and worship for us in the late 80’s and early 90’s. He lead us down highway 36 on March 31, 1991 as we moved from the old building to the new one. He lead us singing VICTORY IN JESUS. Ken didn’t know one note from the other but he was a great praise leader because he lead by example. His favorite solo was “He Touched Me.” Ken basically rewrote every song he sang. Forgetting a word or two was no problem for Ken. You might say, he never sang the same song twice. I guarantee you one thing, the man loves Jesus and he has a marvelous attitude. Ken is having surgery at Vandy this morning and it is a long arduous surgery. Ken says it is a “win/Win.” “I get either health or heaven,” he says. Ten years ago I would have drove to Nashville but I told him I was going to stay home and pray. Both of his children are with him.

Have a great day and thanks for reading the blog.
